Though not a high maintenance item in your home, a little bit of mattress care every so often is a good idea. Especially when you consider how many hours you spend on it. I won’t bore you with the somewhat distasteful information about what might be going (or growing) on inside your mattress, but trust me, a little attention every now and again will help you rest easier.

Allergy sufferers may already know that mattresses are often a culprit of built up dust and allergens. Serta suggests regular vacuuming of your mattress to reduce allergens and dust, but notes that you should use your attachments to do so.

I recommend a good mattress and pillow protector to my customers, especially if you are prone to snacking in bed. You’ll want one that is made of a breathable fabric to allow the gel foams in your mattress to work properly and help with things like allergens, but it also protects from spills and stains. Any type of stain will void your warranty, it’s important to protect your investment. Mattress and pillows protectors are washable.

Rotating your mattress is another easy way to prolong the life of your mattress. Rotating not flipping, most mattresses are one sided. If you have a king size mattress you can turn quarterly to ensure even wear and to avoid the center of the mattress not getting use. The king size mattress is almost a square which allows you not just rotating head to toe.

If you mattress appears to be sagging in the middle make sure your bed has the proper support when it comes to your bed frames. All beds are required to have a center support legs to keep the integrity of your warranty.

At the end of the day, we all want a comfortable, clean place to sleep. Remember if your mattress is 10 years old or older it’s time to treat yourself to a new mattress for a good healthy nights sleep.
